The Land Between the Rivers:
Thomas Nuttall's Ascent of
the Arkansas, 1819
This is a perfect armchair adventure. A modern look at the
exploration of the prairie's during the early 1800's, this book
draws on many eyewitness accounts of that period. Descriptions
of flora, fauna, and the native people of the Arkansas, Red, and
Canadian rivers whisk the reader away to a lost landscape.
Camping near Tulsa, Oklahoma on the Arkansas River, Nuttall
says"I could not help indeed reflecting on the inhospitality of this
pathless desert, which will one day perhaps, give way to the
blessings of civilization." Defiantly a good read.
